I HATE Shopping!

According to the calendar, spring is just around the corner. Of course, we know we won’t be feeling any real warmth until the end of October. Funnily enough, fashion works to the ‘1st September is the first day of spring’ rule too, with many retailers full of their new spring/summer stock right now.  I predict we will even start to see “mid-season” sales appear next month, particularly in the Aussie chain-stores, which does make things especially hard for our independent kiwi boutiques.

Although we do get some very forward-focussed clients at Signature Style, we seem to work far more closely with the actual weather patterns than the perceived ones. I guess the bulk of our clientele are the men and women who go to their wardrobe looking for something appropriate to wear and often can’t find it, so it’s at that moment of panic/frustration/pain that causes them to pick up the phone to get help. This makes our busiest times when the weather changes, not the date.

There are many reasons someone might employ a stylist; their job requires them to look good but they just don’t have the time to invest in that, they’re off on holiday and want some help packing for different seasons and events or perhaps they want to look fabulous for a special occasion. Often we work with people who simply want someone to make the whole ‘getting everything sorted’ easy.
Whatever the reason, there is always a common experience –  the joy of handing over the co-ordinating and planning a wardrobe to an expert; to someone who can see the end result from the first purchase or can find hidden gems in a tired wardrobe.

Lots of our clients are simply too busy to spend time shopping

There are those among us who would never dream of working with a stylist; for them getting dressed is pure joy, shopping a total pleasure – but statistics actually have these women (and certainly men) in an ever-shrinking group. A recent survey found that more than 40% of women don’t find shopping enjoyable at all and of those that do more than 45% find it less enjoyable than they did three years ago.  As for the blokes – more than 70% of them have their clothing bought by someone else; their partner or (heaven forbid) their mother.

What we know at Signature Style is that every woman that doesn’t enjoy shopping or dressing thinks they must be a bit ‘weird’, after all, their friends LOVE to shop. If you’re reading this and you feel like that’s your dirty little secret I’m sharing, trust me – you are NOT alone! There are many, many women who find shopping a chore to be endured, coming home with yet another t-shirt that their daughter ends up wearing. Some don’t get dressed at all – instead getting into their gym gear at the start of the day and remaining in it all day. I once had a woman tell me that she had realised one morning as she was taking her three pre-teen sons out for the day that they were all dressed exactly the same; each was wearing a t-shirt, hoodie, jeans and a pair of Chuck Taylors.

Dressing for your day doesn’t have to be a struggle - truly!

While our retailers are spending their marketing budgets to entice us back for yet another season of retail therapy, there are plenty of us deliberately missing the message. If you are one of them, but want to look great – get in touch.
