To tuck or not to tuck
To tuck or not to tuck?
Okay guys, you may have recently noticed the trend is moving away from leaving your shirt hanging out over your jeans when you are dressing for a "smart casual" event. Instead you now see more and more men with their shirts neatly tucked away into belted waistbands. So, just because that's the 'new' look for guys - should you do it? Well, yes and no. To tuck or not to tuck will be determined by a couple of factors. The first: the length of your torso versus the length of your leg. If you have a particularly short torso, tucking in your shirt can cause you to look extra short through this part of your body. So, if this is you, how to do it well? Wear your trou or jeans a little lower (you definately want to avoid anything higher cut) on your hip and tuck your striped shirt into your trou (vertical stripes create vertical lines to lengthen your torso). You also look best in similar colours top & bottom (not necessarily the same, just similar tones), so remember this when choosing T shirts and Polos. Add a jacket to create your strongest line and you will be looking sharp. The second consideration? Your tummy. If you've spent more time at the barbeque and bar rather than the gym chances are you have developed a bit of a 'belly' over summer. Tucking a shirt in over a rounded belly can be a definate fashion crime. So, unless that tummy is just too big to ignore (you probably know who you are), you can work with this by again choosing a striped shirt that isn't too tight across your tummy and throwing on a jacket over the shirt. And the final things - the details: You need to tuck into stylish jeans - not your old, light blue high-rise pair but a slimmer leg, darker denim pair with a subtle amount of distressing. Not thinking jeans? Tucking in requires a slimmer trou - no pleats. Your shirt needs to be crisply ironed and to fit you well at the shoulder - (no shoulder seam beyond your shoulder), and there should be a small pouch of fabric over your waistband - not enough to obscure your belt, but you don't want to be tightly tucked in. If you are tucking in a T-Shirt, it needs to be a slightly relaxed fit (unless you are super-buff) and horizontal stripes work on guys with long torsos only. Oh, and one last thing; don't tuck any shirt into shorts. If you have no idea what works for your shape and want help with your wardrobe choices give us a call or email us.
