Does what you wear make you happy?
I spent a week working for Westfield Riccarton last month, which was great fun. I have to say, one thing I love about working in a Westfield Style Lounge is how the women that visit aren't afraid of seeking advice. They’re keen to know what will work best for them, and equally keen to put that advice into practice.
As is always the case when I speak to loads of women (we did more than 250 mini style consultations), there's usually some that stand out. This time, there were two women that I was still thinking about when I finally turned out the light at the end of my day. One who admitted that at 42, she had never thought about the way she dressed at all. She was really keen to see what I could tell her, but did say she felt “way out of her comfort zone” talking to a stylist. This woman wasn't by any means badly dressed, but she certainly wasn't dressing to her full potential. I really enjoyed sharing some tips around dressing her shape, and giving her some fresh ideas to try. She excitedly left the lounge and went off to try on some new things, thanking me for my insights.
The other woman who springs to mind was the opposite. Although she dressed fine, she too could have been a little more adventurous. This woman however, wasn’t quite so keen to embrace any new ideas. Instead she was “stuck” with what she wore. She also imagined figure flaws that truly didn't exist. So, for our session I felt powerless to help as she shut down any new possibilities due to her perceived body issues. She stayed on my mind as it saddened me that someone could be so stylistically trapped by their own distorted view.
What these women had in common was that for both, what they wore didn't add anything to their sense of self. If you've read any of my previous articles, you’ll know I believe that what we wear can have a huge impact on how we feel. It doesn’t matter what that is – if it’s your workout gear or your work wear, you want to feel great in it, otherwise what’s the point? So choose wisely – because I believe you'll never have a bad day wearing something that makes you feel great.
If you'd like to get out of a rut or just get started on your style journey, I'd absolutely love to help. Why not fire through a quick email or give me a call on 09 529 5115? Make a time to come and meet me at my 330 Parnell Road studio for a coffee and we can make a plan.
