Key Trends Spring Summer '15-'16

Written by Jackie O'Fee on September 26th, 2015.      1 comments

As with any new season, there’s a plethora of fashion options out there and new trends to navigate. This is of course awesome, as you can pick and choose from a range of styles to find what you like, and what suits you, rather than slavishly following the pack. That said, there’s a few key trends this this SS16 (that’s fashion speak for Spring/Summer 2016 which is the season we are looking at) that you’ll be seeing everywhere – and here’s our top three:
70s fashion-647-586
That ‘70s Vibe:
Oh yes, the ‘70s influence is HUGE. You’ll see this era influencing everything from footwear to fabrics. Think an influx of suede, fringing, paisley, cork heels, flares and key shades of tan, rust and denim blues. It’s inescapable…but we’re loving it. Style influencers you need to channel here are Angie Dickenson in Policewoman, the Charlies Angels gals (flared pantsuits anyone?) and of course, you! Here’s our top tip ‘though – take enough elements of the look to rock the ‘70s buzz without looking as if you’re heading to a fancy dress party. So, try the flares but team with a soft shirt or tee rather than a suede vest, or try the cork wedge with your skinny jeans. Here’s another tip – you know that “rule” that says if you’ve worn it before you can’t wear it again?  It’s complete nonsense, so get in there and have fun!
Bohemian Rhapsody:
You won’t be able to walk into a store this season without tripping over a sheer blouse edged in lace, gathered at the shoulder and under the bust. Expect to see soft pastel shades and gypsy inspired looks everywhere. Hats abound, as do boots and strapped up the leg sandals. Add a fringed cape or kimono jacket to your tee and jeans, find a dress with a deep, gathered ruffle at the hem and go for gold. If it’s floaty and feminine you’ve nailed it. Layering your pieces works brilliantly – think summer music festivals and you’re halfway there. What’s best about this trend is how accessible it is, and how feminine and gorgeous it feels. This is definitely a complete opposite of the previous seasons’ masculine inspired looks – it’s as girly as it gets. To avoid looking a bit like an extra from “Picnic at Hanging Rock” you may want to harden it up slightly; pair a gorgeous sheer lace blouse with your slim-cut boyfriend jeans or pop your leather jacket over a boho dress.
Denim Delight:
It’s EVERYWHERE and it’s no longer just jeans. You’ll find the blue stuff worked into dresses, skirts, trousers, playsuits, blazers, tops and jackets and even better, we’re wearing these all at once! Having spent season after season as a personal stylist warning people away from the perils of double denim, I’m now eating my words. No longer the domain of the ‘70s porn star (they’re “in” now anyway – see above), this look is totally on trend this summer. Top tip: you don’t even have to vary your shades of denim – it’s perfectly acceptable to match. Tuck a chambray shirt under a pair of denim dungarees, top a denim skirt with a denim tee, add a denim jacket and hit the road. Never have your favourite weekend staples been so in vogue.
