Key Trends for Autumn Winter 2015

Sitting in my car the other day where the temperature gauge told me it was 30 degrees outside, I got a text – a boutique I often visit sent “New Seasons Knitwear in Store Now, come and Check it out!” Hmmm. Good luck with that, I thought. It seems that with this delicious extended summer no-one wants to think about winter, even ‘though we all know it’s coming.

Even though we are enjoying these long, warm days it does actually make sense to get into stores now in order to buy some trans-seasonal pieces that will see you through winter, especially if you live in the north as these are the things you are likely to wear a lot, If you wait for the weather to get really cold, there’s a possibility you will have nothing but heavy knits and wool coats to choose from; and let’s be honest, those things only work when you actually live in a part of the country that gets really cold, or you plan to visit colder climes often enough to warrant their purchase.

So, what will you find if you start looking now? We’ve identified a few key trends for Autumn and Winter 2015.

Pastels: Yes, the traditionally summer palette is playing into the winter months. Grey, pale blue, pale pink and lilac are all being reworked into lovely pieces of knitwear, coats and classic winter staples like trou and skirts.

Architectural pieces: Look for minimalist but sculptural lines in tops, skirts and jackets. Exaggeratedly rounded shoulder lines, funnel necklines, extra padding worked in neoprene, leather and heavy sweat-shirting – these pieces are possibly the most exciting change seen in fashion for a few years.

Black & White: Stripes, stripes and more stripes, mostly in black and white. Add a delicious pop of bright red and you’re totally on trend for the season.

Sports Luxe: This isn’t new, but shows no sign of abating – perhaps led by a world more and more obsessed with healthy lifestyles. Mesh, team tees, hoods, zips, knit fabrics, racing stripes on knitted trims, body-con pieces with neon accents – it’s workout gear that you won’t want to work out in. Team these pieces with high heeled Nikes and you’re good to go.

Masculine Styling: Wide-legged culottes and slim legged pants, longer line, slightly oversized blazers, shirts, hats and brogues, trenchcoats and vests, menswear inspired looks are big news this season. Even better – it’s super comfortable and easy to wear.

Capes: Rug like wraps and capes are taking over, these look fantastic worn with a new season midi-length pencil skirt and shirt, or simply wear back with your jeans and tees. Look for blanket inspired styles; they’re at every price point.
